The full Golden Circle — How I like to it and how you can make it yours
The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most visited day route — a natural way to begin your journey and experience your first iconic sights in this raw, otherworldly country.
We enjoy nature most when we slow down — because that’s when we begin to truly feel it.
Nature is no longer just seen — it’s felt.
Like always, every recommendation in this guide is based solely on my personal experience. I don’t earn anything from any company — and I will keep it that way. My wish is that your journey feels personal and unique to you.
This guide gives you the full route, with a pre-loaded Google Map and carefully selected layers — from food stops to shops — described honestly, just as I drive the Golden Circle. So you can choose what feels right, and enjoy more.

— A glimpse of your day
Four and more stops are waiting for you
Stop # —
Þingvellir
The tectonic plate edges are here. Standing in the sinking valley, between two continents, is unlike anywhere else on earth.
Hidden waterfall inside the park
Stop — Hidden gem
Efstidalur Farm
A family farm off the tourist track. Locals bring their families here. 70% of visitors drive straight past.
Stop —
Strokkur
A column of boiling water blasting 30 metres into the sky, every few minutes. You never fully expect it.
Stop —
Gullfoss
Two tiers of waterfall dropping into a canyon. Most people see it from above. There is another way in.
+ Kerið Crater · Friðheimar · Laugarvatn · Brúarfoss · all timing, GPS and local context inside the guide
— From your Guide
Two suggestions to make your day better.
Gullfoss has four viewpoints. Almost everyone only sees one or two.
The upper viewpoint on the lower parking is what you see in almost every photo. The other three puts you somewhere completely different. The guide walks you through them — and helps you decide how much time to give each one, depending on your day.
We Icelanders say that the real-Iceland starts when you drive out of Reykjavík
The Golden Circle is Iceland's most crowded route — but only at certain hours. There is a window where Þingvellir is calm, quiet, and entirely yours. The guide tells you exactly when to leave, and why this single decision improves the whole day.

Extraordinary to watch. Worth understanding before you arrive.
+ Geysir - A note worth reading
The geothermal area at Geysir is one of the most active in Iceland. The water is boiling — but if it’s blown toward you by the wind, it cools quickly before it reaches you. In winter, be aware of icy paths, and take time to enjoy the colors. If you’re using ChatGPT, try taking a photo and asking what minerals create them.
Stay on marked paths only — unless you want them to name that particular spot after you ;)
Good awareness makes the experience better, not smaller.
FAQs Before you buy
Do I need a 4WD?
No. All Golden Circle roads are paved and accessible year-round with a regular 2WD. The guide notes where 4WD makes a difference and when it matters.
Can I do this in winter?
Absolutely. The Golden Circle in winter is extraordinary — and the geothermal pools are open year-round. — (psst … in winter are few tourists, you have the places to yourself!) The guide includes winter-specific guidance throughout, including adjusted timings of 15% extra.
Is this suitable for young children?
Yes. All walks are optional and short. The guide notes which stops are stroller-friendly and where children tend to love it most.
How much time do I actually need?
The guide is built for a full day. It also tells you honestly what to prioritise if you have less time — so whatever version of the day you do feels complete, not rushed.
Do I get updates for free if things change?
Yes. Lifetime access - but download it within 24 hrs — if anything on this route changes, you receive the updated version automatically at no cost.
