Why this eclipse is worth planning around
On Wednesday, 12 August 2026, the Moon's shadow crosses western Iceland. Reykjavík experiences about one minute of totality; the longest totality on Icelandic land reaches 2 minutes 13 seconds at Látrabjarg.
You do not really watch a total eclipse so much as experience the whole landscape changing around you.
As the last sliver of Sun narrows, the light changes, the temperature can drop and the horizon can glow in every direction. During totality the Sun's corona — its outer atmosphere — becomes visible around the black lunar disc. The solar wind flows outward from the corona and, when charged solar particles later interact with Earth's magnetic field, they can contribute to auroral displays. The eclipse itself, however, is a distinct event.

The Moon takes its first bite
A small notch appears at the edge of the Sun. Eclipse glasses are required from this point onward.
The crescent deepens
Daylight begins to look flatter. Look at the ground for crescent projections beneath leafy trees or through a safe pinhole projector.
The light turns strange
Colours mute, shadows sharpen and the atmosphere of the landscape begins to change quickly.
Diamond ring, then darkness
Only when the bright photosphere is completely covered: glasses off. Look first. Photograph second.
The deepest point
The corona surrounds the black disc. Reykjavík receives roughly one minute of totality.
Direct sunlight returns
The instant the photosphere reappears, look away and put eclipse glasses back on before looking at the Sun again.
The Moon takes its last bite
The eclipse is finished. Eclipse-day traffic may not be — this is a good time to stay put and let the first rush pass.

The path crosses the westernmost part of Iceland: the Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, Greater Reykjavík and Reykjanes. Farther east, the eclipse remains partial.

One rule — used precisely
Safe solar viewing is straightforward. The partial phases require purpose-made solar viewers; totality does not.
How to use eclipse glasses
The safest routine removes the rushed handoff between glasses-on and glasses-off.
Put them on before you look up
Face away from the Sun, fit the viewer, then turn and look up.
Check condition and source
Use viewers from a trusted supplier, and discard any pair with torn, scratched, punctured or loose filter material.
Keep them on through the partial phase
If any bright part of the Sun's photosphere is visible, solar protection stays on.
Remove them only during totality
Once the Sun is completely covered, remove the viewer and experience the corona directly.
Glasses back on before direct sunlight returns
At the end of totality, look away first, replace the viewer, then look back.
What you may actually notice
A total eclipse changes the environment, not just the shape of the Sun.
Before totality
The light becomes flatter and less familiar. Shadows sharpen. The air can cool. Wildlife may respond to the sudden change in daylight.
During totality
Look at the corona first. Then look around: the horizon can glow in every direction. Bright planets may become visible. The experience is short enough that a camera can easily become a distraction.
If it is cloudy
Totality is still a major environmental event. Even beneath cloud, daylight collapses quickly and then returns. If you have mobility, the weather forecast is still worth using to improve your odds of seeing the corona.
Afterwards
Do not make the end of totality your cue to sprint to the car. Watch the returning partial phase, have coffee, take a walk and let the first wave of traffic disperse.
Get the picture without losing the experience
Every optical device needs a solar filter during the partial phase. Only during totality can the filter come off — and it must be back in place before direct sunlight returns.
Phone
During the partial phase, cover the phone's active camera lens with a purpose-made solar filter secured according to its instructions. Use a support or tripod if possible. During totality only, remove the filter. Keep exposure simple and use burst/continuous shooting if your phone offers it. Do not spend the whole minute looking at a screen.
Camera / telephoto
Mount a proper solar filter securely over the front of the lens for every partial phase. In the path of totality, use a setup that can be removed and replaced quickly without fumbling. The filter comes off only after totality begins, then goes back on before the first bright photosphere returns.
Binoculars / telescope
Never use eclipse glasses at the eyepiece as a substitute for an objective filter. The solar filter belongs over the front aperture. Aim without looking through unfiltered optics — for example, by using the instrument's shadow — and secure the filter against wind or bumps.
Plan the whole day
Official traffic management begins on the morning of the eclipse, and specific closures apply in Reykjavík and other high-demand viewing areas. Treat this as a full-day outing.
