We use the approach through Þjórsárdalur and the northern Fjallabak country to connect waterfalls, Icelandic history, hidden green valleys, volcanic craters and lakes before the final arrival in Landmannalaugar.
Some days we stop more. Some days we drive deeper. Weather, road conditions, daylight and your energy decide what deserves the time.

Small waterfalls, twisted lava formations and vegetation make Gjáin feel almost improbable after the open terrain around it. It is one of those places that changes the rhythm of the day.

Turquoise water and multiple small falls make this canyon one of the most visually surprising stops on the northern approach to Landmannalaugar.

Frostastaðavatn sits among black lava and rhyolite mountains. When road, time and visibility cooperate, Ljótipollur adds another volcanic crater landscape before the final run into Landmannalaugar.

Landmannalaugar is not one viewpoint. It is a base inside a landscape of rhyolite mountains, lava fields, geothermal water and hiking trails.
How we use our time here depends on you. A day built around walking is different from a day built around photography, a geothermal soak or simply reaching the area and exploring it slowly.
This is where the private format matters most: we do not need to pretend every guest wants the same Landmannalaugar.
Take a hike.
Choose a shorter walk or, when the day is deliberately built around hiking, use trails toward Laugahraun, Brennisteinsalda or Bláhnúkur. The longer mountain options need proper time and suitable weather.
Stay close and absorb it.
Walk around the lava and geothermal area, take photographs, eat something, watch the weather move across the mountains and give the place more time instead of collecting another stop.
Geothermal bathing.
When access and timing work, Landmannalaugar’s natural geothermal bathing area can become part of the visit — especially if the day is designed with fewer stops and more time at the destination.
The rough edges are part of the appeal.
This is remote Iceland. Roads are seasonal, conditions change, and a capable 4×4 is part of the experience rather than a styling choice.
Sometimes the route itself is the adventure.
Gravel, washboard, rough sections and water crossings can all be part of Highland travel. I choose the route around actual conditions and the vehicle — not around a promise made months earlier.
The road occasionally keeps souvenirs.
There is a reason you find walls of lost licence plates around Highland stops. The interior has a way of reminding people that this is not the Ring Road.
