There is a lot of Iceland packed into one direction.
Drive east from Reykjavík and the landscape keeps changing: geothermal areas, open farmland, waterfalls falling from old sea cliffs, the glacier-capped volcanoes, black beaches and a coastline exposed to the North Atlantic.
That variety is why this is one of Iceland’s classic day journeys — and why doing it privately matters. We can adapt the route to weather, your interests and what is actually worth stopping for on the day.
The places that shape the day.
We keep the major South Coast highlights, then use the road between them intelligently rather than treating the day like a fixed checklist.
The South Coast starts before the famous waterfalls.
Depending on timing, weather and what interests you, we can use the drive east for geothermal landscapes, local stories and overlooked places such as Urriðafoss instead of driving straight through everything between Reykjavík and the headline sights.
Walk behind the water.
Seljalandsfoss is one of the few great waterfalls where the path can take you behind the falling water in suitable conditions. Nearby Gljúfrabúi hides partly inside a narrow canyon — exactly the kind of second stop that turns one famous sight into a richer experience.
Sixty metres of raw power.
Stand at the base, climb the steps for the view from above, or simply give the waterfall enough time. This is also where the story of Eyjafjallajökull and the 2010 eruption fits naturally into the landscape around you.
Meet ice sitting on volcanic ground.
The South Coast is where glaciers descend toward black volcanic sand. We can stop to understand the landscape from the ground, or turn this part of the day into a proper glacier experience with a separately booked guided walk.
Cliffs, ocean and a completely different scale.
Dyrhólaey gives you the coast from above — the sea arch, long black beaches, glacier views and, in season, nesting seabirds. Wind and conditions decide which viewpoints make sense, and that is exactly where a private day helps.
Black sand, basalt and the Atlantic.
Reynisfjara is beautiful and powerful. The waves demand respect, so we choose where to stand and how to experience the beach according to the conditions. Vík then gives us a natural final point for food, a pause and the decision of how the rest of the day should unfold.

This is the usual flow of the private day — Reykjavík, the waterfalls, glacier country, Dyrhólaey, Reynisfjara, Vík and back west — always adjusted to weather, season and how you want to use the day.
Add an experience to the South Coast.
These are paid, separately bookable experiences. They change the shape and length of the day, so I fit them into the route rather than simply stacking them on top.
Glacier Walk / Hike
Step onto the ice with a certified glacier guide and the required equipment. This turns the glacier from something you look at into something you actually experience.
Katla / Mýrdalsjökull Ice Cave
Go into the glacier landscape rather than only seeing it from the road. Cave conditions and access change, so this is booked around season, availability and what is operating safely.
ATV + South Coast Landscapes
Leave the main road and ride through black-sand and volcanic terrain. A good option when you want more action and a different perspective on the landscape.
ATV + DC-3 Plane Wreck
Use an ATV experience to reach the famous DC-3 wreck on the black sands and combine the site with the open coastal landscape around it.
Optional experiences are paid separately, require advance booking and may extend the day. Availability and operating conditions vary by season and weather.
The South Coast is a route, not a timetable.
A typical day runs Reykjavík → South Coast waterfalls → glacier country → Dyrhólaey / Reynisfjara → Vík → Reykjavík. But wind, road conditions, daylight, photography, your interests and any booked activity can change the order. We use the day rather than serving the schedule.

The route changes character depending on who is travelling and what you want from Iceland.
Make the South Coast a 2–3 day journey.
If you want to continue beyond the classic day route, the South Coast becomes far better as a slower 2–3 day private journey. Instead of forcing everything into one very long day from Reykjavík, we keep moving east and give the region the time it deserves.
That opens space for Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach, Svartifoss and the landscapes around Vatnajökull — the biggest glacier in Europe. The guiding rate stays the same as this day tour, 195,000 ISK (≈ US$1,625) per day, while I help find accommodation according to the style, comfort level and pace you want.
