Glacial rivers, green valleys, black volcanic ground, canyons and glaciers rising on every side. Þórsmörk is one of those places where getting there is already part of the story.
A green refuge between glaciers.
Much of Iceland’s interior feels stark and exposed. Þórsmörk is different. Mountains and glaciers shelter a surprisingly green valley cut by glacial rivers, with birch, moss, black sand, deep canyons and enormous views packed unusually close together.
Here, fire and ice are not metaphors.
Þórsmörk sits between glaciers and volcanic systems. At Gígjökull, an outlet of Eyjafjallajökull, you can stand in a landscape dramatically reshaped by the 2010 eruption and its glacial floods.
The lagoon that once lay in front of Gígjökull disappeared during the eruption, filled by mud and volcanic debris. The valley still carries the evidence: fresh channels, black sediment, glacier scars and terrain that looks very different from older photographs.
Þórsmörk is not a normal rental-car excursion.
The deeper road into Þórsmörk crosses unbridged glacial rivers. Their depth, current and crossing line can change with rain, temperature and meltwater. A crossing that looks easy on one day may be the wrong decision on another.
That is part of what makes this journey special. We stop, look, read the water and adapt. I do not promise that we cross a particular river simply because it appears on an itinerary.
Four landscapes that can make the day.
The exact order changes with the rivers, weather, walking conditions and what you want from the day. These are the places I would build around.
A canyon you enter, not just photograph.
A narrow, green ravine where the landscape closes in around you. Depending on conditions and how far you want to go, this can be a short look inside or a more adventurous walk deeper into the gorge.
Stand below the volcano that stopped European air traffic.
Gígjökull spills down from Eyjafjallajökull into the valley. The 2010 eruption sent glacial floods down this side of the volcano and transformed the ground below the glacier.
Walk into a canyon hidden behind the rivers.
High rock walls, water, moss and a narrow gorge leading toward a hidden waterfall. This is where the road access and the walk combine into a real Highlands experience rather than another roadside stop.
Then give the valley some time.
Once inside Þórsmörk, the day can lean toward a viewpoint, a short hike, forest and river landscapes, photography, or simply staying longer in one place. A private day does not need to turn every beautiful place into a five-minute stop.
A direction, not a rigid script.
This gives you the shape of the day without pretending Highland travel can be fixed months in advance. River levels and road conditions always have the final vote.

This does not have to be a hardcore hiking day.
Þórsmörk rewards strong hikers, but you do not need to prove anything to enjoy it. We can make the day physical, photographic, contemplative — or simply comfortable and beautiful.
